Rows And Files Chess
You want to clearly distinguish between the Rows and Files on a Chessboard. This needs a graphic.
You may be familiar with Columns and Rows, as used in tables containing data (i.e. sports results, etc.) ... A Column organizes data vertically in the table (top to bottom), while the Rows organize data horizontally (left to right).
In Chess, the names are different:
- Columns are known as Files;
- Rows are known as Ranks.
For the purposes of recording moves and describing positions of both armies, Algebraic Chess Notation uses alphabetical labels for the Files and numerical labels for the Ranks:
- Files range from a to h;
- Ranks range from 1 to 8.
