If kf1, Black's Knight would have a 3 pronged fork on g3.
15. ... Nf2+
Instead of g3, f2 forks King, Rook, and Bishop.
Any other square is inferior for the King.
16. ... Nxh1 17. Qe1
A rather surprising move for Black, and presents him with a pleasant dilemna. If Black captures on e1, he will be up the Rook on h1 once the Knight moves to safety.
17. ... Qxh3
Instead, Black chooses to not take advantage of the full exchange, and instead takes the pawn, to weaken the possibility of a White Kingside attack. Black will still be up the exchange.
