In general, a King's maximum Range of movement, per turn, is ONE square, but in ANY direction.
However, technically, if you include the Special Move - "Castling", which enables a King to switch places with either Rook, to quickly safeguard the King and get the Rook into a more advantageous position - the King's maximum Range is 2 squares.
When Castling, the King moves 2 squares either to the Kingside or Queenside, then swaps places with the Rook, on that side.
However, as Castling can only happen once, per side, in a single game, we won't consider as part of the King's standard Range (1 move in any direction, per turn ).
