You'll notice that BOTH Kings start on the e1 and e8 squares, respectively and that they sit on the right-hand side of the Chess Board.

This is THEIR half, known as the "Kingside" and the entire region is marked within the squares:

  • e1-e8-h8-h1.

In contrast, to the Kings, BOTH Queens start on the d1 and d8 squares, respectively ... They sit, waiting for the action to start, on the left-hand side of the Chess Board.

This is THEIR half, known as the "Queenside" and the entire region is marked within the squares:

  • a1-a8-d8-d1.
