White's Game-Losing Mistakes

White's game-losing mistakes appear to be ...

  • 2. dxe5, Overextends this Pawn. Accepting the Englund Gambit also gives White Doubled Pawns on the e-file and opens the a5-e1 diagonal, which later causes problems for White on the Queenside, leading eventually to an early Checkmate.

Furthermore, it's this very Pawn that forces White into heavily defending it (3. Nf3, 4. Bf4), while his King remains exposed and on the a5-e1 dark-diagonal, immediately accessible by Black's Queen (4...Qb4+).

Perhaps 2. c3 or 2. e3 might have been better Pawn moves. Alternatively, 2. Nf3 would have doubly defended the d-Pawn, while developing the KN, in preparation for Kingside Castling.

From 4...Qg4+, onwards, White's moves are all desperately defensive and forced - the game becomes Black's to lose!
