Other Stalemate Situations - Teaser - Bishop and Wrong-color Rook Pawn v Lone KingIn this example, White Defends for Stalemate on the Kingside.

See how White's King blockades Black's Pawn, preventing it gaining promotion, while Black's
dark-Bishops can't get at White's King, as highlighted by the yellow arrows.

As the Kings can't attack one another, there are no other options for Black to achieve Checkmate, or dislodge White's King. So, it's Stalemate.

At the start of a game of Chess, both players have two Bishops:

  • One patrols along the diagonals, on the Dark squares;
  • One patrols along the diagonals, on the Light squares.

By themselves and working together, they can "Checkmate" the enemy King ...

Take one of the Bishop-Pair away and, with just a Rook-Pawn - that is, either Pawn on the a-file or h-file - in support, with their King, the opponent's solitary King CAN survive to bring about Stalemate.

The defending King's got TWO key objectives...

The solitary King - the Lone King - MUST pick the correct side of the Board to flee to, in order to accomplish two key Objectives:
  1. The Lone King needs to tuck himself into a corner, in his own half, where the square's color is opposite to the attacking Bishop.

  2. The Lone King needs to keep within striking distance of the enemy's Rook-Pawn(s), to prevent them from Promoting.

Providing the Lone King is smart about his movements, when crowded-in by the enemy, he can hold out for a Draw - in this case, it'll usually be by "Mutual Agreement" or, if his opponent's a stubborn git, eventually, by the "50 Move Rule".
