Interpretation : You want to know about the methods used for recording positions and moves of Pawns and Pieces on a Chessboard.
In today’s evolution of Chess, the standard for recording positions and moves of Pawns and Pieces is Algebraic Notation and the Grid System works as follows:
On the Chessboard, the squares are grouped into 8 horizontal rows, known as Ranks and 8 vertical columns, known as Files.
- Ranks are identified with numbers: 1 to 8
- Files are identified with letters: a to h
Just like plotting the coordinates of locations on map, we can used these Numbers and Letters to give a unique reference point to the 64 individual squares on the Chessboard.
