Each side begins every game with two sets of Flank Pawns — one group of three Pawns sit on the Queenside (on files a, b & c); the other group of three Pawns sit on the Kingside (on files f, g & h).
Often, one set of Flank Pawns will be kept back at base to guard the Castled King, while the other set of Flank Pawns will tackle the enemy Pawns facing them (if possible, gaining at least one Passed Pawn and striving to get it Promoted).
Studying the Pawns (Flank Pawns)
Assuming you intend to Castle your King (it’s not always necessary!), once you’ve established which set of Flank Pawns will guard the King, you can then begin planning how you’ll use the set of Flank Pawns on the opposite side of the board.
This article looks at creating the conditions that enable you to launch a “Pawn Storm” against the enemy’s position, by having the advantage of a Mobile Pawn Wing.
