Quick Chess Game

If you've come to this page to find out about some sort of Quick Chess Game, you'll find there are two different entries both sharing the same title.

  1. The first refers to a Chess Game Variant, by Joe Miccio.

  2. The second refers to the Time Control element - which dictates a fast game of Chess.

The Chess Game Variant

Whenever you see mention of a Chess Game Variant, or some similar description, it refers to a slightly different game to that of traditional Chess.

Joe Miccio's (apparently) Award-winning game, released in 1991, was created as an introduction to the full, traditional game of Chess, as we know it today.

Chess Glossary - Quick Chess Game - Play ModeThe Game can be played by a single person, versus the computer program; or, providing two people are sitting at the same machine, they can take it in turns and do battle against each other.

The stripped-down nature of this Game has a few rule-restrictions over the traditional game of Chess. For instance:

  • Pawns cannot move two squares on their opening move.

  • There is NO Castling.

  • Pawn Promotion is included, but restricted as you can only put back on the board the pieces that have been captured.

For example, if you still have a Queen on the board, there WON'T be an option to get another Queen on your side.

On the other hand, say your Rook has been captured. When you get a Pawn to your opponent's back row, you WILL be able to Promote the Pawn and put the Rook back on the board.

The Time Control

Blitz Chess - Chess Glossary Article GraphicAlternatively, Quick Chess also refers to the Time Control element, which dictates the play of a relatively fast game of Chess.

Other names for a Quick Chess Game include Blitz Chess, Rapid Chess, Bullet Chess and Armageddon Chess.

Each title refers to a swift game of Chess with a slightly different time factor ...

  • Blitz Chess is a game that lasts for between 6 to 10 minutes. Each play gets a limit of 3 to 5 minutes.

  • Rapid Chess may give each player anywhere between 15 to 60 minutes. This is the same as Quick Chess

  • Bullet Chess is much faster, providing just 1 to 2 minutes for each player to try and win the game.

  • Armageddon Chess operates to the benefit of whoever plays as Black. If the game ends in a draw, Black will win. The compensating factor, for White, is the Time Control element - White usually gets 6 minutes, while Black's time is limited to 5.
