I think Chess is a great game! It forces the player to think... Actually use their mind and make a decision.

Computer games are very fast paced, spur of the moment... No time to think, just keep clicking!

I agree that kids today need to "get outside' and run around, because any type of exercise is better than becoming "couch potatoes", but I think chess can still be a very fun part of their lives.

It's probably not for every kid, just as playing a musical instrument is not for everyone. But, for many, it can become quite an addictive sport (for the mind, that is).

Remember back in the day when the most popular game was checkers? Milton Bradley still sells plenty of 'Checkers' games today! Board games have been around for a very long time, and hopefully they won't become forgotten, but will remain a popular past time!

Re: Chess Not For Everyone

I still kind of think that, for the transferable life-skills that Chess provides - Problem Solving; Reasoning; Adapting to problem situations; etc. - that it (Chess) has a place in schools, for teaching to ALL kids, both girls and boys.

However, sure, at some point, personal preference will take over and some kids will stop playing Chess regularly (perhaps they won't choose it again).

But others will find it's a hobby/interest/profession that they are good at and will study to improve (Magnus Carlsen is a case in point)

Do you agree, or have a different opinion?
