What I Needed Ken To Clarify,
[+] Better King Position

May 19th 2011, additions to that discussion ...

Referring to paragraph 1 of Ken's comments, May 18th, regarding a Better King Position ...

(KW, May 18th) There is a lot in the chapter (22) on the factors concerning the King. All H&M-S say is that the point goes to "the King that is free to roam", p.266.

(GW, May 19th) Having read Chapter 22 (page 255), most of the "other factors", which I wondered about, seem to take place closer to Endgame phases of play. The following would all be cases for a Better King Position ...

  • Getting the King closer to the Center, before the adverse King (see game sequence, below, No. 180; also in PCC, pages 255-256)

  • Getting the King closer to the adverse Pawns (see game sequence, below, No. 180, Move 9. ... Kf3; also in PCC, page 256, Move 9. ... K-B6).

  • The King becomes more powerful the closer it gets to the enemy's 1st Rank (see game sequence, below, No. 180, Move 9. ... Kf3; also in PCC, page 256, Move 9. ... K-B6).

The caveat before exchanging Pieces down, in order to move into the Endgame phase, is that you first make sure your King has the better position - i.e. closer to the middle/center of the board than the adverse King, which is what White's King does, as shown in the game sequence below, No. 181, page 257 ...
