[+] Outside Passed Pawn

(GW) What I needed Ken to clarify ...

Outside Passed Pawn

  • I think this is a Passed Pawn that's on one of the Flanks ... Does it also need to be on the opposite side of the board to the enemy King?

Ken's Comments ...

It doesn't need to be on the flanks. It just has to be the "passed pawn ... most remote" (p.251) from all the rest of the pawns. If pawns are blockaded on g- and h-files, for instance, and Black has a passed pawn on the e-file, and White has a passed pawn on the d-file, the White d-file pawn is the passed pawn most remote from all the other pawns. Thus it could be central, or on the flank.
