Chess Tactics Teaser - Discovered Attack TacticAn attack is deemed as "Discovered" when one piece moves, to attack another and, in doing so, reveals a piece behind which suddenly has direct line of sight to threaten another of your opponent's pieces.

When the uncovered piece is in a direct line to threaten the enemy's King, it is often referred to as a "Discovered Check".

The main pieces involved in these Discovery attacks are any two from the:

  • Knight
  • Bishop
  • Rook
  • (or) Queen

Below are some example scenarios, where an attack is "Discovered"...

Examples of the Discovered Attack ...
  1. Example 1 (page 2)
    Discovered Attack Tactic, Teaser, Example 1.White's Qh1 will provide the attack on Black's Rb7, which will be the Discovered Attack, when White puts Black's King in check, with Ne4-f6+.

  2. Example 2 (page 3)
    Discovered Attack Tactic, Teaser, Example 2.White's Rg2 will provide the attack on Black's Rg6, which will be the Discovered Attack, when White's
    Bg3-d6 attacks Black's Nc5.

  3. Example 3 (page 4)
    Discovered Attack Tactic, Teaser, Example 3.White's Qd1 will provide the attack on Black's Qd4, which will be the Discovered Attack, when White's
    Bd3-b5+ puts Black's King in check.
