Black's Game-Losing Mistakes

Black's game-losing mistakes appear to be ...

  • 3...Nxe4, leaves Black's King as the sole guardian of his f-Pawn, which is a mistake in itself.

It appears the combined positioning of 1. e4, 2. Nc3 & 3. Bc4 is the collective danger signal that Black needed to have spotted in order to prevent playing 3...Nxe4, especially with the d1-h5 light-diagonal open for White's Queen, enabling Qf3 (with the potential for Qf3+, which, in this sequence, proved fatal for Black).

  • 5...Nc6, probably a failure to spot the danger posed by White's Queen (Qd1-f3+), though maintaining such an exposed King is asking for a kicking.

5...d6 would have released Black's QB (Queen Bishop), enabling Bf5, blocking the check, in the event of Qf3; while, if Qh5+, then ...g7-g6 would force White to move the Queen a second time in the Opening phase.

After 7. Ng5, Black's game is lost, as he cannot muster enough troops to deal with White's Queen AND the position of White's Ng5. To move any other pieces (than 7...Qxg5), enables 8. Qf7# and the game is lost anyway.

In this Checkmate Opening example, I particularly like the way White's Queen uses Black's e5-Pawn as shield, to enable Checkmate, without Black's Qg5 capturing White's Qd5!
