Black's Game-Losing Mistakes

Black's game-losing mistakes appear to be ...

  • 3...g6, possibly played in the wrong order? Scanning ahead, through the game (below), White's QN plays a key role in White's Checkmate victory, but not once is this Knight dealt with by Black.

3...Nf6 would have dealt with the threat of White's Knight even if it landed on d5.

Overall, 3...Nf6, 4...g6, 5...Bg7, preparing for 6. O-O, would have been better, defensively, than the actual example.

  • 5...Bg7, fails to deal with White's Nd5, which now has the advantage of its Strong Outpost Station.

5...Nf6 would have invited the Knight Exchange, but Qd8 would be able to clear up for Black (though would swiftly have to be moved again, due to the threat of e4-e5).

As it happened, White's dark-Bishop becomes a realized threat to Black's Queen, leading to a series of desperate moves by Black, contributing to his downfall.

  • 7...Bxd4, though 7...Nc6xd4 doesn't improve Black's position, or neutralize the combined threats of Nd5 & Bg5.

7...O-O would have been better, to get the King to a safer region, while bringing the KR in towards the action, while letting the Queenside Pawns deal with the possible Knight Exchange (Nd4xc6 bxc6, to enable Black's KR to emerge via b8, perhaps).
