Black's Game-Losing Mistakes

Black's game-losing mistakes appear to be ...

  • 3...Nd7, was the crucial, game-losing mistake!

It's not just White's Bc4 that makes Nb8-d7 such a poor choice. It's the combined position of White's Bc4, plus Nf3 ... Critically, though, it's the misjudgment by Black of leaving his King to be the sole guardian of the f7-Pawn.

Once White's Bc4 strikes (4. Bxf7+), Black's King must defend himself, but this brings White's Nf3 into play, with the short trip to g5, forcing the King to move yet again.

  • 5...Kf6, did bring the King to his swift demise ... but, the other options (5...Kg7 and 5...Ke8) would have put Black at a serious disadvantage - BOTH Queen-losing moves:

5...Kg7, which enables 6. Ne6+, not only for a Royal Fork Attack (involving both King & Queen), but a three-way Fork Attack, also snaring Black's dark-Bishop!

5...Ke8, also followed by 6. Ne6. No 'check', but Black's Queen has nowhere to go, and no defenders to come to her rescue.

Even with Black's self-inflicted mistakes, I love this sequence ... It's the way White's Pieces combine to compel Black's King out of his realm, to be put to the sword inside White's territory, with Black's remaining army powerless to stop it (once 3...Nd7 allows 4. Bxf7+, which leads to Black's King taking his walk of doom).
