The Triumph of the Bishop

At the start of a game, the general consensus is that the bishop and knight are roughly equal in worth, or relative value.

The Bishop tends to be superior on an Open board, when there's lots of space, so that its long-range power can be used to both attack the enemy and retreat when it comes under attack.

This example highlights factors that give the lone Bishop superiority over the lone Knight.

H&M-S suggest that the side with the Knight needs two countable advantages, if he is to stand any chance of winning in a Bishop v. Knight situation.

It's also a similar situation to triumphing with the Bishop, in that (the Knight) needs additional help from its King and a few Pawns, in order to be victorious.

In this example, Black triumphs with the Knight.
