[Recording Captures]

Annotated Chess System - Algebraic - Recording Captures
Algebraic Annotation Recorded Captures 1

Continuing on where we left off, move 4 has been used to show how the notation log displays captures ...

In this scenario:

  • White's Bishop captures (x) Black's piece on the square c6;

  • Black's Bishop counters, by capturing (x) White's piece on the square c3.

Note: that the notation log doesn't refer to the piece that was captured, only that a capture was made by which piece, on which square.

In this second scenario, it's the Pawns that make the capture:

Algebraic Annotation Recorded Captures 2

The notation log records captures made by a Pawn by: first stating the File (column) that it came from and then states which square the capture (x) took place ...

In this scenario:

  • White's 'd' file Pawn captures (x) Black's piece on the square c3;

  • Black's 'd' file Pawn counters, by capturing (x) White's piece on the square c6.

Once again, there's no letter-reference to signify that it was a Pawn that made the capture - but it can be easily recognised by such an absense.

Moving On: Recording Castling (Page 8).
