Absolute Queen Fork, Example
- Overview -

Chess Fork Attack, Absolute Queen Fork example.This image shows an example of two Black pieces, one including the King, as highlighted (yellow squares), which have been slotted into the pattern ripe for a double attack by a Queen, with White's Qg3 (red square) within range to attack.

The highlighted green square shows where the Absolute Queen Fork will take place, when White's Queen moves to b3.

Black's priority would then be to get his King out of check. Black has two options, in this instance:

  1. Move the King, but lose the Rook and White's Queen stays on the board;

  2. Block the check with ...Re6-b6 and see whether White wants to sacrifice the Queen (Qxb6 ...cxb6), leaving it up to White's Knight and King to prevent Black's King and Pawns from gaining Promotion. If White is successful, Black's King will be too far away to prevent one of White's Pawns gaining Promotion at the other end.

In this example, following White's Queen threat, Black moves his Rook onto e6.

White could play for the Check to Black's back row, but there is now a possibility for a Queen Fork Attack, which would be Absolute, as it would involve Check, as well, from b3.

White won't necessarily secure capture of Black's Rook, as Black could move it to b6, where it would be backed-up by the c7 Pawn ...

Given White's material advantage, would White choose to sacrifice the Queen, in order to capture the Rook? It's certainly an option.
